Getting your home ready for sale may seem like a hectic time, but it doesn’t have to be. With a little careful planning and a good checklist, you can be ready for great showings of your home that will have you well on your way to a sale!
Inside:
It goes without saying, however, keep your home clean and presentable–immaculate, if possible! Keep yourself in the buyers’ shoes at all times.
Check interior lighting for brightness. Nothing makes a home presentation worse than a dark and bleak house.
Decluttering your home is essential. Packing up infrequently used items can seemingly add space to your home. Be sure not to throw things into closets, which can make your storage space look insufficient. It’s best to take items offsite (store, donate, etc.), if possible.
Depersonalize your home. Take down photos, pictures, etc. It’s difficult to think of your home as not yours anymore, but that’s the frame of mind you should be in for prospective buyers.
Clean the “Hard-to-remember” areas. Ceiling fans, corners, and baseboards are frequently overlooked by sellers.
Steamclean your carpets and mop/steam your hard floors.
Kitchen: Don’t overlook your cabinets. You don’t want buyers finding dusty cans or storage jars. Replacing cabinet knobs and drawer pulls can make a nice improvement at a fairly low cost.
Bathrooms: Relatively inexpensive enhancements such as adding new towels, a shower curtain, decorative soap, even a trash can–can add to aesthetic appeal.
Bedrooms: Adding a new bedspread can actually do a lot to pull this room together.
Laundry Room: Keep machines clean and floors free of lint bunnies.
Kids’ Rooms: Consider using covered baskets for toy storage.
Outside:
Keep your lawn well-groomed and free of weeds.
Make sure your house numbers are plainly visible.
Add a few potted flowers to create a welcoming environment.
Paint the front door to give the whole front area a fresh boost!
Clean the windows, outside and inside, to let the sun shine in!
Clean under the eaves. No cobwebs!
Plan on not leaving garbage cans out any longer than necessary.
Garage: Don’t overfill and keep the floors clean and dry. Avoid cluttered shelving.
Safety:
Don’t leave out medications, jewelry, financial info, small computers, or weapons! Lock them all up!
