Many people find themselves short on space in the home moving process. Sometimes getting extra storage space outside the home is the only interim answer. And that often means renting space at a storage facility. Should you find yourself with such a need, here are eight tips to help get you on your way.
1. Determine your storage needs.
Are you going to be using the storage for decluttering while your house is on the market or do you need to store your entire household while waiting for your new home?
2. Location, location, location!
Just like your house, the location of your storage facility is important. You might find yourself moving items over a period of time, so a convenient location is important.
3. Operating hours
If the storage shed is gated, it may have limited access hours. Make sure these hours will work with your schedule. If you need very early or late hours, check for 24-hour access.
4. Storage facility condition
You’ll want to make sure the facility is clean and well-maintained. Check for any possible drainage concerns.
5. Pricing
Many facilities offer specials for the first month or two. Unless you only need a short-term solution, make sure the cost isn’t going to be prohibitive after the initial special.
6. Climate-controlled
Means your items should stay dry and dust-free. A comfortable living temperature (by AC/heating) should be maintained. Some facilities also maintain the humidity level. All of these benefits can help prevent pest infestations, mold and mildew, rust, and cracking and splitting of furniture.
7. Common storage sizes
You’ll need to calculate your total space needed, including walking aisles. Here are some size considerations:
• 5×5 unit – personal items, boxes, bookcases, small furniture
• 5×10 unit – furniture, bedroom contents (mattress, drawers)
• 10×10 unit – furniture, appliances, bookcases, boxes, motorcycle
• 10×15 unit – boxes, appliances, a 2-bedroom apartment,
• 10×20 unit – a 3-bedroom apartment/ house, major appliances, boxes
• 10×30 unit – a 4/5 bedroom house, major appliances and boxes
8. Safety
Does the facility provide security, cameras, or a manager who lives on site? Who doesn’t have valuables they want to keep safe?
These eight storage facility tips should help you live a better “in-between” lifestyle; hopefully, it isn’t a long one! If you have any tips you’d like to add to this list, please leave them in the comments below.
