In the late 1950’s, development began in the Four Hills area located in the Southeast quadrant of Albuquerque. In 1959, the Western Skies Motel was built and remained an Albuquerque landmark until its demolition in 1988. On December 7, 1962, President Kennedy stayed at the motel on his overnight visit to Sandia National Laboratories. The Four Hills Village Shopping Center now occupies the site. With the first home in 1957, the golf course in 1958, and its foothills location with large lots, and spectacular mountain and city views, Four Hills was quite the elite neighborhood. Four Hills Country Club was the second country club in Albuquerque and now boasts a 135-acre, 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Bob Baldock. You can also enjoy tennis, swimming, and dining as well as two large ballroom style banquet facilitie
Today, the Four Hills community consists of a diverse mix of housing, including single family homes as well as townhouses. This area continues to see sizable growth with the new divisions of Breeze at Mountain Gate, Covered Wagon, and Winterwood.
The area shopping and commercial district contains businesses such as Smith’s, Icon Cinema, Starbucks, Dion’s Pizza, Einstein Bagels and Sprouts. Recreational opportunities include the Manzano/Four Hills open space, which is part of the Sandia Foothills open space, and has hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails covering 146 acres. Dogs are allowed on leash. Easy access to I-40 and Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) make this an attractive neighborhood.
