The UNM Duck Pond is a wonderful oasis located on the UNM campus near the Zimmerman Library. The duck pond was completed in 1976 and has become a great recreational area for all. The diversity of people and activities makes for a fascinating way to pass your time.

You can just sit back and relax by the waterfall and feed the ducks or stretch your legs and watch the people. You never know what you’ll experience. It could be several college kids tightrope-walking between two trees. Or the peaceful sounds of a guitarist sitting on the bank of the pond.

You’ll find some interesting sculptures around the area. Or maybe a dog splashing into the pond trying to chase the ducks! There’s often photographers taking photos of this scenic area. It’s a great location to hang out with friends, study, or just relax. It’s also a great place to surf the Web, according to the Daily Lobo!

The UNM area and UNM South offer diverse mixes of housing.  This includes single family homes as well as townhouses and condos. The UNM Area and UNM South cover way more than the campas area–it is bounded by I-25 and San Mateo, and by Central/Indian School and Gibson/ABQ Sunport.

The Elena Gallegos Picnic Area is a beautiful, 640-acre park with an elevation of approximately 6,500 feet and a plethora of flora and fauna. A network of paths is available for hikers, bikers, and equestrians. There are two paths for hikers only. The Cottonwood Springs Trail is an easy, fully accessible half-mile self-guided path that leads to a pond and wildlife blind. On this path, you can enjoy artwork by Margie O’Brien at the shaded rest stops.

The Pino Trail (#140) is a challenging 4.5-mile path where you can enjoy the wildlife of the Sandia Mountains. Make sure you see the “Five Stones of Elena Gallegos” by Billie Walters. This rock garden is comprised of five weathered boulders selected by the artist. These sculptures are a memorial to conservationist Phil Tollefsrud.

The fees are one dollar on Mondays through Fridays and two dollars on the weekends, per vehicle. You can also purchase an annual pass. The application can be downloaded online which is also valid at Boca Negra Canyon. To find the park, take Tramway North to Simms Park Rd and turn East. Then follow 1.5 miles to the visitor center. The hours are April through October, 7:00 AM–9:00 PM, and November through March, 7:00 AM–7:00 PM.
