It’s hard to believe that Labor Day is almost upon us here in Albuquerque. It won’t be long now that we’ll be preparing ourselves for State Fair and Balloon Fiesta. Until then, though, there are a few things homeowners should consider checking on. Here’s my five end-of-summer home maintenance tips.
1.Check your air flow.
Now’s the time to hand vac any built-up dust from your stove vents, room fans, baseboard heaters, and dryer vents. Not only will this help continuous air flow, but it’ll also decrease your risk of fire.
2.Test your heater.
Yes, you can easily change your air filters. But every year, most experts advise having your heating system inspected and serviced. You know you don’t want to be caught in a freeze with a broken heating system.
3.Light your fireplace.
Inspect your fireplace and chimney for any build-up. The Chimney Safety Institute of America states that open masonry fireplaces should be cleaned when there is a quarter of an inch of sooty build-up. You may want to call in a professional to clean your fireplace flue and liners. Even if you don’t use your fireplace often, bird nests in the chimney flue can clog the space, creating a fire hazard.
4.Check your insulation.
You should check your interior and exterior for any spots that need new caulk or weatherstripping, especially windows and doors. Remember, making repairs will not only keep you warmer, but save you some money on your utility bill!
5.Paint and carpet.
If you’ve been planning to do any interior painting or carpet cleaning or replacement, you should start these projects now while you can keep your windows open for ventilation.
Remember, a little maintenance and expense now can mean a lot of headaches saved later during family holiday festivities!
